Shield of honor
The Peasant Culture Foundation has awarded the Vehkaniemi Farm with an honorary plaque for traditional construction. The plaque of honor is a thank you and a tribute to the self-sacrificing work that has lasted for generations, with which the farm's old building base has been preserved and kept in good condition. The condition for awarding a plaque of honor is that the originality of the object has been preserved in its essential parts and the object is in its location a tribute to the peasant building tradition.
Award criteria
The shield was applied to Vehkaniemi by the Pohjaslahti club in recognition of the long-term local work carried out by previous generations. Vehkaniemi's courtyard includes several buildings, mainly from the beginning of the 1840s, partly from the 18th century, and as a whole they are protected as culturally and historically valuable. 'The courtyard district has not been ruined by new construction that does not fit the style. The conversion work for rural tourism has been done discreetly and without hiding the traces of the past life.' To top it all off, the new construction sites on the beach are made of centuries-old, ancient logs related to the house's history, with a touch of modern architecture.
Celebration event
The plaque nailing ceremony was held on Sat 29.7.203. To celebrate the occasion, a hugely successful tenor vocal concert was organized, where tenors from Finnish National Opera Juhana Suninen and Allan Raffaele performed Neapolitan and other gems of tenor vocal music. Raija Seppänen, chairman of the honorary board of the traditional construction of the Peasant Culture Foundation, presented the foundation's activities. On behalf of the city of Mänttä-Vilppula, city planning manager Julia Virtanen donated a beautiful rhododendrum to Vehkaniemi's farm as a thank you for nurturing the local tree stock.
